ANI Files for Damages Against Nevada In U.S. District Court
|
|
|
|
|
On Apri 8, 2013 the Ninth District Court of Appeals decided in favor of Alliance of Nonprofits for Insurance Risk Retention Group (ANI) in its long legal battle with the Nevada Division of Insurance. However, the court did not award damages to the RRG. This judgment prompted ANI to file a motion in early May with the U.S. District Court in Nevada to recover damages, according to the RRGs president and CEO.

Domiciles Ranked by Premium, Vermont Dominates
|
|
|
|
|
Vermont-domiciled RRGs reported $1,575.5M in premium in 2012. More than seven times the amount of any other risk retention group domicile. Vermont’s premium grew by 2.9% over 2011's reported $1,530.8M in premium. This is nearly the same overall percentage by which the whole industry grew in 2012.

RRG Assets and Surplus Up in 2012, an Analysis by Domicile
|
|
|
|
|
Risk Retention Group premium was up in 2012, but RRG total admitted assets and policyholder surplus also showed gains. RRGs posted a very slight gain in total admitted assets—up from $7,700.1M in 2011 to $7,804.3M in 2012 -- an increase of just 1.4%. RRG surplus in regards to policyholders posted a more significant gain of 7.9%, going from $3,242.7M in 2011 to $3,499.6M in 2012. Looking at RRG assets and surplus by their domicile, the top ten states are mostly unchanged from 2011.

RRG premum in 2012 showed solid growth, growing by 2.9% to $2624.8M. Nearly all of the nine business areas grew last year as well, with only three reporting losses. To take a closer look at this data, this month the Risk Retention Reporter presents a Special Report that makes an in-depth analysis of the industry’s 2012 premium by business area. Risk Retention Group Registrations Growing In Every State

In the past several years, risk retention group registrations have greatly increased in every state across the U.S. The registration of RRGs in states is one way to measure geographic penetration of RRG operations, which is an indicator of the overall strength of the marketplace. Tennessee RRG Insuring Physicians Cell Captives
|

In late 2012, Med Mal Risk Retention Group, Inc. was licensed in Tennessee, the first new RRG licensed in the state since 1996. The RRG is writing medical professional liability for physicians groups organized as incorporated protected cells under Physicians RE Captive Insurance Company.

New Captive Association Launches in Oklahoma
|
|
|
|
|
In recent months Oklahoma has received a boost as a captive domicile with newly updated captive legislation and the formation of a state captive association. In March, the Oklahoma legislature passed a revised captive law updating the existing law originally passed in 2004. At the same time, supporters of the state’s captive community joined together to form the Oklahoma Captive Insurance Association (OCIA).

This month three new risk retention groups were added to the RRR listings, and no RRGs were deleted, taking the total number of RRGs up to 258. Eight new purchasing groups were added to the RRR listings, and no PGs were deleted, bringing the total number of PGs up to 890.
